BYD builds its 150,000th commercial EV as the Q3 electric tractor targets long-haul freight
The milestone unit rolled off the Huai’an line on October 9, 2026 — and BYD says it signals a push from urban buses and delivery vans into heavy-duty, long-distance trucking.
BYD has produced its 150,000th commercial new energy vehicle, marking a milestone in the Chinese automaker’s commercial vehicle business as it increases its focus on electric trucks. The milestone vehicle — a Q3 electric semi-truck — rolled off the production line at BYD’s truck plant in Huai’an, Jiangsu province, on October 9, 2026. The company said the achievement capped 18 years of development in commercial new energy vehicles.
The Q3 is equipped with a commercial-vehicle-specific Blade Battery, a peak motor output of 600 kW, and dual-gun fast-charging support — specifications aimed at the long-haul segment, where range, charging efficiency and operational reliability decide whether electric trucks work in commercial service.
The milestone lands in a market moving fast. Data from the China Automobile Dealers Association’s Passenger Car Market Information Joint Branch shows that in the first eight months of 2026, China’s new energy commercial vehicle sales reached 725,000 units, up 44% year-on-year — while new energy heavy-truck penetration hit 47.8% in August, a 20.6-percentage-point jump from a year earlier.
Caveats apply. BYD has not disclosed the Q3’s real-world operating costs, order volumes, or fleet-scale operational data for long-haul logistics. Charging-network coverage density, vehicle turnover efficiency, and full life-cycle total cost of ownership remain the practical hurdles for comprehensive electrification of cross-regional freight — and those are the metrics by which the Q3 will be judged.
Beyond the domestic market, BYD showcased its commercial vehicle product matrix — covering urban delivery, regional transport and long-haul logistics — at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover in September, bundling vehicle sales with charging infrastructure, energy management, fleet operations and maintenance. According to company disclosures, its new energy commercial vehicles have entered more than 70 countries and regions worldwide.
