2026 in electric trucks: from the Q3 to driverless freight
A 150,000-unit milestone, driverless trucks in daily service, and a Chinese heavy-truck market tipping electric — commercial EVs had their year.
BYD’s 150,000th commercial EV (October 9)
BYD produced its 150,000th commercial new energy vehicle on October 9 at its Huai’an truck plant — and the milestone vehicle was the Q3 electric semi-truck, a 600 kW, dual-gun-charging statement that BYD’s commercial business is moving from urban buses and delivery vans into long-haul heavy-duty freight.
Driverless electric freight goes daily (October 6)
Einride and EASE Logistics put two SAE Level 4 autonomous, cab-less electric trucks into scheduled daily freight operations between EASE warehouses in Marysville, Ohio — running since September with remote operators monitoring off-site, as part of the Ohio–Indiana Truck Automation Corridor project.
China’s heavy trucks tip electric
The structural shift underneath: China’s new energy commercial vehicle sales hit 725,000 units in the first eight months of 2026, up 44% year-on-year, while new energy heavy-truck penetration reached 47.8% in August — up 20.6 points in a year. At IAA Transportation in Hannover in September, BYD pitched the integrated version of this future: vehicles plus charging infrastructure, energy management, fleet operations and maintenance as one package.
